A national symbol steeped in history
The Indian flag features three horizontal stripes of saffron, white and green. The saffron stripe symbolizes courage and sacrifice, the white represents truth, peace and purity, and the green symbolizes faith, fertility and prosperity. At the center of the white band is a navy-blue wheel, the “Ashoka Chakra”, with 24 spokes. This wheel is an important symbol of eternal right (dharma) and law, inspired by Emperor Ashoka, one of the greatest rulers of ancient India. Adopted in 1947, this flag represents the aspirations and ideals of the Republic of India.
