The flag of Uruguay, first adopted in 1830, is composed of nine alternating sky-blue and white horizontal stripes, symbolizing the nine original departments of Uruguay. In the upper left-hand corner, on a white background, is the “Sol de Mayo” (Sun of May), a symbol of freedom and independence inspired by the May Revolution in Argentina, which also influenced Uruguay. The sun is also a reminder of the Incas, highlighting the region’s indigenous roots.
