A national symbol steeped in history
The Mexican flag, adopted in 1968 but based on earlier designs, consists of three vertical stripes of green, white and red. At the center of the white stripe is the national emblem, depicting a Mexican eagle perched on a nopal (cactus) holding a snake in its beak. This image is highly symbolic for Mexico, as it is based on an Aztec legend that indicated where to found the capital, Tenochtitlan. The colors of the flag have rich meanings: green represents hope and prosperity, white symbolizes peace and unity, and red recalls the blood shed by national heroes.
