A national symbol steeped in history
The flag of Malta, adopted in 1964 at the time of the country’s independence, consists of two vertical stripes of white and red. The white stripe is on the pole side. This design is directly inspired by the traditional colors of the Knights of Malta. A representation of the Cross of St. George with a red border is also featured in the upper left-hand corner, symbolizing the Knights’ bravery and historic role in defending the island.
