A national symbol steeped in history
The flag of Chile, also known as “La Estrella Solitaria” (The Lone Star), was adopted in 1817. It consists of two horizontal stripes of unequal size; the upper stripe is white and the lower stripe is red. In the top left-hand corner, on a blue background, is a white five-pointed star. The white represents the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, the blue symbolizes the sky and the Pacific Ocean, the red recalls the blood shed for independence, and the star represents the nation’s guiding state.
