A national symbol steeped in history
The flag of Portugal, adopted in 1911 after the establishment of the Republic, is composed of two vertical fields: green on one side of the flagpole and red on the other. Green symbolizes hope and renewal, while red represents courage and the blood shed by those who defended the nation. At the center of the flag is the national emblem, consisting of a shield containing five small cross-shaped blue shields arranged in a cross themselves, surrounded by seven small towers and surmounted by an armillary sphere, symbolizing Portuguese maritime discoveries.
