A national symbol steeped in history
The flag of Cuba, officially adopted in 1902 but designed as early as 1849, is composed of five alternating horizontal stripes of blue and white, with a red equilateral triangle at the pole containing a white five-pointed star. The three blue stripes represent the departments into which Cuba was divided at the time, while the white stripes symbolize the purity of the independence ideal. The red triangle symbolizes the blood shed for freedom, and the star, called “La Estrella Solitaria” (The Lone Star), represents independence and liberty.
