The flag of Moldova, adopted in 1990 after independence from the Soviet Union, features three vertical stripes of blue, yellow and red. These are the traditional colors of pan-Romanism, representing fraternity with other Romance nations such as Romania. At the center of the yellow stripe is the national emblem, featuring an eagle holding a shield with an aurochs, a historic symbol of Moldavia. The eagle represents strength, freedom and sovereignty, while the aurochs recalls the country’s medieval past.
