A historic symbol of great significance
The Cross of Burgundy, an emblem used from the 15th century onwards by the Dukes of Burgundy, became widely recognized when it was adopted by the Spanish kingdoms, including the period of the Spanish Empire when it was featured on military flags and banners. The design consists of a red St. Andrew’s cross, often with flames, on a white background. The cross recalls the martyrdom of Saint Andrew, who is said to have been crucified on an X-shaped cross.
